What is phenylephrine eye solution? (Back to top)
PHENYLEPHRINE (Neo-Synephrine®) acts as a decongestant for the eyes. It treats several different eye problems. Phenylephrine can make the pupils (centers of the eyes) larger before eye examination or surgery. Generic phenylephrine eye solution is available.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine? (Back to top)
They need to know if you have any of the following conditions:
•head injury or disease
•heart disease
•glaucoma
•high blood pressure
•over active thyroid
•an unusual or allergic reaction to phenylephrine, sulfites, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
•pregnant or trying to get pregnant
•breast-feeding

How should I use this medicine? (Back to top)
Phenylephrine eye solution is only for use in the eye. Do not take by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Wash hands before and after use. With your middle finger, apply pressure to the inside corner of your eye for 1 to 2 minutes. Tilt your head back and pull your lower eyelid down to form a pouch. Drop the solution into the pouch. Do not blink for 30 seconds. Close your eye gently for 1 to 2 minutes until the solution is completely absorbed. Try not to touch the tip of the dropper to your eye, fingertips, or other surface. Do not use your medicine more often than directed.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What if I miss a dose? (Back to top)
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose. Do not use double or extra doses.

•atropine
•bromocriptine

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check before starting or stopping any of your medicines.

What side effects may I notice from using phenylephrine? (Back to top)
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
•dizziness, or fainting spells
•difficulty breathing
•eye pain, vision changes, floating spots before the eyes
•irregular heartbeat, palpitations, or chest pain
•increased sweating
•pale skin
•tingling, pain, or numbness in the hands or feet

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
•blurred vision, or stinging in the eyes
•confusion, nervousness
•headache
•nausea, vomiting

What should I watch for while taking phenylephrine? (Back to top)
Check with your prescriber or health care professional if your condition has not improved within 1 week, or if it gets worse. Do not use phenylephrine for more than 3 days without your prescriber's advice.

Notify your prescriber or health care professional at once if you get a severe eye pain, headache, vision changes, floating spots, eye redness, or pain with exposure to light. These may be signs of serious side effects.

You may get blurred vision; do not drive, use machinery or do anything that needs clear vision until you know how phenylephrine affects you.

Phenylephrine eye drops (the 2.5% and 10% strength) will make your pupils (centers of your eyes) large. This can make your eyes sensitive to light. Wear sunglasses and avoid bright sun or other bright lights.

Where can I keep my medicine? (Back to top)
Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F); do not freeze. Protect from light. Do not use if solution is brown or contains a precipitate. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
